Katy Jones MBBA

Professional Musician, Senior Brass Tutor at Royal Northern College of Music

I am a professional trombonist, and having always been on the smaller side, I developed a vested interest in breathing efficiently.

Although not my current profession, I actually graduated in Pharmacy from the University of Manchester. I had, however, played trombone from a very young age and studied it seriously from 13, so decided to return to my first love. I have since toured the world with orchestras, brass groups and as a soloist, and played on many film and tv soundtracks.

As my teaching career developed, I became aware of how few brass teachers have the necessary language and knowledge to talk about breathing techniques, and so often avoid the topic. With a background knowledge of physiology and anatomy, I was able to research around the topic and find appropriate ways to present it. I have now given a number of lecture/workshops on the topic, alongside general injury prevention, to musicians from the age of 13 up to retirement, across all instruments. I have given these at places such as the Royal Academy of Music, Oslo Music Academy, Royal Northern College of Music and the Hallé Orchestra. I was more recently awarded a Senior Fellowship at the RNCM for my work and leadership in this area.

The Buteyko Method has given me a greater depth of knowledge, and I have been able to work with my students using a wider range of techniques, helping some of them with a wider range of symptoms triggered by over-breathing.  Being a professional musician means that my key skills lie in communicating information clearly and in an age appropriate manner. As well as working with individuals, I am very comfortable delivering presentations about the Buteyko Breathing Method to workplaces or students of any age.

I am based near Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, and both parking and public transport is available.
