Buteyko Breathing Technique

Buteyko Breathing Technique (BBT) is a breathing re-education and life style management programme. Breathing re-education aims to reduce disordered breathing so the breathing pattern becomes more efficient. Techniques to clear the nose, manage symptoms and reduce unnecessary coughing are also included.

Life style management focuses on stress reduction, maintaining a healthy weight, healthy eating and exercise promotion. BBT requires commitment. This is not a ‘laying on of hands’; the technique only works if the exercises are practised.

BBT is steadily becoming used more in the UK, since 2008 it has been included in the British Guideline on the Management of Asthma as a method for managing symptoms of asthma.

The BBT course offered by BBA teachers is based on our experience and approach to teaching the technique to patients suffering from asthma and related breathing conditions.

For individuals to succeed with BBT it is recommended that:

  • A minimum of five hours of face-to-face tuition is received.
  • You practise for 15 -20 minutes three times every day, for a minimum of six weeks.

The breathing exercise commitment is not arduous but individuals do need to make the effort to fit them into their daily routine. The exercises are not difficult when practised correctly -and in fact most people find them relaxing. Eventually the breathing style becomes part of everyday life.
